How the estimate works
2026 standard deduction & ordinary brackets
Single $16,100 ยท Married filing jointly $32,200 ยท Head of household $24,150. Ordinary income is reduced by the standard deduction, then taxed at 10/12/22/24/32/35/37%. (IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32.)
Long-term capital gains
Preferential rates stack on top of taxable ordinary income. Approximate 2026 thresholds: 0% up to ~$49,450 (single) / ~$98,900 (joint); 15% up to ~$545,500 (single) / ~$613,700 (joint); 20% above. These are simplified; actual stacking rules are more precise.
Self-employment tax
Rough estimate: 92.35% of net SE profit ร 15.3% (12.4% Social Security up to the wage base + 2.9% Medicare). Half is deductible, but this version shows the gross SE tax for planning. Not a substitute for Schedule SE.
What this leaves out
State tax, tax credits, AMT, additional Medicare tax, NIIT, itemized deductions, QBI, and precise capital-gains stacking. Educational estimate only.
