Court filings, grant applications, theses, board packets, bid documents, HR files — sooner or later someone asks for "numbered pages." Usually the document is already a PDF, the original Word file is long gone or came from three different people, and adding numbers means either buying a PDF editor or uploading the file to a free website.
This guide shows a third option: add page numbers in your browser, with the file staying on your device the whole time.
Why page numbers matter more than they seem
Numbered pages are how people refer to a document. "See page 14" only works if page 14 is labeled. Reviewers, lawyers and examiners also use page numbers to check nothing is missing — a packet labeled "Page 1 of 22" makes a lost page obvious. And once a PDF is printed and the staple comes out, numbers are the only way to put it back in order.
The catch: the documents that need numbering are often the most sensitive ones — legal filings, financial packets, personnel records. Uploading them to a free service means a full copy on someone else's server.
How NoUpload adds page numbers
NoUpload's Add Page Numbers tool runs entirely in your browser using pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library. It writes a small number onto each page as real text, in a clean dark-gray Helvetica, and saves a new PDF. Nothing else on the page is touched — your content isn't redrawn or compressed.
It also handles awkward pages properly. Numbers are placed according to how each page is displayed, so landscape pages and pages that were rotated get their numbers in the right corner, the right way up.
Your options
| Setting | Choices |
|---|---|
| Position | Bottom center (default), bottom right, bottom left, top center, top right, top left |
| Style | 1, 2, 3… · Page 1, Page 2… · Page 1 of 10 · 1 / 10 |
| Start at | Any number — 1 by default |
| Text size | Small, Medium (default), Large |
| Cover page | Tick Don't number the first page (cover) to leave page 1 blank |
Step-by-step
- Open the tool: lunibyte.com/noupload/add-page-numbers.html.
- Choose your PDF. Drop it in or tap to choose. NoUpload shows the file name and page count.
- Pick a position and style. Bottom center with plain numbers is the classic choice; Page 1 of 10 is popular for forms and official packets.
- Set the starting number if this document continues another one — for example, start at 23 for the second volume of an exhibit set.
- Skip the cover if needed. Tick Don't number the first page (cover). Numbering then begins on page 2, and that page gets your starting number.
- Tap Add page numbers. The new file downloads as
yourfile-numbered.pdf.
How the "of" total is worked out
With the Page 1 of 10 and 1 / 10 styles, the total is the last number that appears in the document. A 10-page file starting at 1 reads Page 1 of 10 … Page 10 of 10. If you skip the cover, the cover isn't counted, so a 10-page file shows Page 1 of 9 on its second page. If you start at 23, the last page of a 10-page file shows Page 32 of 32 — which is what you want when the file continues a numbered series.
Getting the order right first
Page numbers follow the pages as they are in the file, so finish arranging the document before numbering it:
- Merge all the parts into one PDF.
- Reorder, delete or rotate pages until the order is final.
- Add page numbers last.
If you number first and then move pages, the numbers move with them and end up out of sequence.
Which position should I choose?
- Bottom center — the most common and the most neutral; works for almost everything.
- Bottom right — traditional for double-sided printed reports and legal documents.
- Top right — common in academic papers and manuscripts (often alongside a running header).
- Top or bottom left — useful when the right side of the page already has a logo, stamp or signature block.
NoUpload keeps a comfortable margin from the edge of the page, so numbers don't get trimmed off when printing. If a document already has a footer, choose the top instead so the two don't overlap.
What it doesn't do (yet)
Add Page Numbers keeps things simple, so a few specialist formats aren't included:
- Prefixes or Bates numbering (like
ABC-000123orExhibit A-1) used in legal discovery. Add Page Numbers offers the four styles above. - Roman numerals for front matter (i, ii, iii). If you need them, a word processor is still the best tool for a document you're writing from scratch.
- Different numbering for different sections. A workaround: split the document into sections, number each with its own starting number, then merge them back together.
For everyday numbering — reports, packets, applications, theses, printouts — the built-in styles cover what most people are asked for.
On iPhone and Android
Open the page in Safari or Chrome, tap the box and pick the PDF (Files on iPhone, Downloads on Android). The settings are ordinary drop-down menus, so they work comfortably on a phone. The numbered PDF downloads to your phone; on iPhone, tap the download arrow in Safari's address bar to open or share it.
How to confirm nothing was uploaded
On a computer, press F12, open the Network tab and clear it, then add page numbers. No request carries your file. On any device, load the page, turn on airplane mode, and it still works.
Frequently asked questions
Can I skip the cover page? Yes — tick Don't number the first page and numbering starts on page 2.
Do rotated or landscape pages get numbered correctly? Yes. Numbers are placed relative to how each page is displayed, even on landscape or rotated pages.
Can I remove page numbers later? Keep your original file — NoUpload never changes it — and number it again with different settings if you need to.
Will the numbers be searchable text? Yes. They're added as real text, not as an image.
How many times can I use it? Your first 3 uses of any NoUpload tool are included — no signup, no watermark. After that, NoUpload Pro unlocks unlimited use of every tool.
