Watermark a PDF Without Uploading It

By the Lunibyte team · Updated · 5 min read

You're sending a draft contract that isn't final yet. A copy of your ID to a landlord who only needs it for one application. A proposal to a client you've never worked with. In each case, a clear watermark — DRAFT, COPY, FOR RENTAL APPLICATION ONLY — tells everyone exactly what the document is and makes it harder to misuse.

The irony is that most free watermark tools want you to upload the very document you're trying to protect. This guide shows how to watermark a PDF in your browser, so it never leaves your device.

When a watermark helps

A watermark is a visible label printed across a page. It doesn't lock a document, but it does three useful things:

That last one is the strongest reason to watermark identity documents before you send them anywhere — and the strongest reason not to upload them to a random website to do it.

How NoUpload's Watermark PDF works

NoUpload runs entirely in your browser. It uses pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library, to draw your text onto every page of the document in a bold font, then saves a new PDF. The text is sized automatically to fill the page nicely, centered, and it respects each page's displayed orientation — so landscape and rotated pages get a properly centered watermark too.

Your original file is never changed, and nothing is uploaded.

Your options

Setting Choices
Watermark text Anything up to 60 characters — CONFIDENTIAL by default
Layout Diagonal (corner to corner) or Horizontal
Transparency Very light, Light (default), Medium, Strong
Color Gray (default), Red, Blue, Black

Step-by-step

  1. Open the tool: lunibyte.com/noupload/watermark-pdf.html.
  2. Choose your PDF. Drop it in or tap to choose. NoUpload shows the file name and page count.
  3. Type your watermark text. Short is strong: DRAFT, COPY, CONFIDENTIAL, or a specific purpose line.
  4. Pick layout, transparency and color. Diagonal gray at Light is a safe default that stays readable without hiding the content underneath.
  5. Tap Add watermark. The new file downloads as yourfile-watermarked.pdf.

Choosing the right settings

Longer text is automatically drawn smaller to fit the page, so a 50-character purpose line will be less prominent than a single word. If you need both, keep the watermark short (COPY) and put details in the email you send with it.

Watermarking an ID or document scan

  1. Scan or photograph the document. If you have photos, turn them into a PDF with JPG to PDF — see our guide to converting JPG to PDF without uploading.
  2. Watermark it with who it's for and when — for example FOR ACME RENTALS ONLY 10/2026.
  3. Choose Medium transparency so the text crosses the important details clearly.
  4. Send the watermarked copy; keep the clean original on your device.

Watermark or something else?

A watermark labels a document; it doesn't hide anything. Depending on what you're trying to achieve, it may be one part of the answer:

Used for what it's good at — clearly labelling copies and drafts — a watermark is fast, simple and surprisingly effective.

Honest limits

A watermark is a deterrent, not a lock. NoUpload draws the text onto each page, so it can't be deleted like a comment or a sticky note — but someone with PDF-editing software could still work to cover or remove it. For truly sensitive documents, a watermark works best alongside sharing only with people you trust.

The watermark uses a standard built-in PDF font, which supports letters, numbers and common punctuation in basic Latin script (English and similar). Accented letters from some languages, emoji and non-Latin scripts aren't supported; if your text contains them, NoUpload tells you instead of producing a broken file.

On iPhone and Android

Open the page in Safari or Chrome and tap the box to choose your PDF (from Files on iPhone, Downloads on Android). Type your text with the normal keyboard, choose options from the menus and tap Add watermark. The result downloads to your phone; on iPhone, tap the download arrow in Safari's address bar to open or share it.

How to confirm nothing was uploaded

On a computer, press F12, open the Network tab and clear it, then watermark a file. No request carries your document. On any device, load the page, switch on airplane mode and watermark — it still works.

Frequently asked questions

Is the watermark on every page? Yes, every page gets the same watermark, centered.

Can the watermark be removed? It is drawn onto each page, so it can't simply be deleted like a comment — but a determined editor could still cover it.

Does watermarking reduce quality? No. Your pages aren't redrawn or compressed; the text is added on top.

Which characters can I use? Letters, numbers and common punctuation in basic Latin script.

Can I use a logo or image as a watermark? Watermark PDF adds text. For most purposes — drafts, copies, confidentiality notices — text is clearer than a faint logo anyway.

Can I put the watermark on just some pages? It's applied to every page. If only part of a document needs it, split that part out, watermark it, and merge the pieces back together.

How many times can I use it? Your first 3 uses of any NoUpload tool are included — no signup, no watermark of ours. After that, NoUpload Pro unlocks unlimited use of every tool.
